Waimataitai Kindergarten becomes more sustainable

At Waimataitai kindergarten they are learning about how they can be more sustainable and look after Papatūānuku (Mother Earth). With a growing awareness surrounding the damage that plastic bags are doing to our environment, they have been exploring ways in which their kindergarten can make a difference.
After a discussion about this, the kaiako and tamariki have decided we need to make small changes within our kindergarten to lessen this impact.

Together they have been making reusable bags, to use instead of plastic bags.  Tamariki have enjoyed helping to measure, cut, sew, and thread our bags, with many tamariki showing great delight in using a sewing machine, something that many had not seen before.  It is lovely to see and hear the enthusiasm of our tamariki as they develop and support their understandings around the need to look after Papatūānuku and the living world.  This also sits alongside Waimataitai kindergartens curriculum priority, Manaakitanga, caring respectful relationships with people, places and things

Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata
