On the 9th of June, nine Teachers from Kowhai, Ti Kouka and Ranui Kindergarten’s attended a professional development course in Christchurch entitled ‘Seeds of citizenship’. It was a very knowledge enriching course which challenged existing theories and expanded teachers understanding of citizenship from a child’s perspective. During the day teachers explored children’s social justice, their right to be a valued contributor to society and the implications behind ensuring their voices are heard. The main lecture was also complemented by three great workshops. These included environmental sustainability and animal companionship in early learning, with the last workshop covering the topic of teachers being present in practice as modern day pressure take us away from the importance of relationships. The valuable networking time with other organisations and agencies dedicated to the quality of early learning was also a highlight.
