Working together to care for our environment.
When young children learn kaitiakitanga (guardianship and conservation), they learn to respect, care for, and protect people, places, and things. When they care for the natural environment, in the daily flow of centre life, they develop skills and knowledge that support them in caring for nature throughout their life (Ritchie, Duhn, Rau, & Craw, 2010).
Autumn is here and Fairlie Area tamariki have been enjoying working together to feed the worm farm, prune the raspberry vines and remove leaves from our grounds. They certainly have lots of them. As one of the tamariki said, “We got hundreds of millions.” This is a wonderful opportunity to connect tamariki to nature, for them to learn about how to respect and care for the environment, and about seasonal cycles. Fairlie Area Kindergarten have recently joined the Enviroschools programme and look forward to supporting our tamariki in further learning about sustainability.
